The festive season can be a time of joy and togetherness for many, but for those who have experienced domestic abuse, it can also be a time of heightened stress, anxiety, and fear. This is especially true for mums who share children with an abusive partner or ex-partner. If you have separated from a perpetrator then you have come to the right place for support. 

At Mums In Need, many of us have lived-experience of coercive control and we can offer non-judgemental support when you need it the most. 

Navigating the Holidays after Abuse

The festive season is often associated with togetherness, family gatherings, and exchanging gifts. However, for mums who are experiencing ongoing coercive control, these events can increase opportunities for the perpetrator to harm survivors and can trigger memories of the abuse and make survivors feel isolated and alone. It can also be difficult to see loved ones celebrating while you are struggling with the aftermath of abuse.

Here are a few tips for navigating the holidays after abuse:

• Prioritise your own well-being. This means setting boundaries, saying a safe no to things that you don't feel comfortable with, and taking time for yourself to relax and recharge.

• Connect with supportive people. Surround yourself with friends, family, and other supportive individuals who can offer you love, understanding, and encouragement.

• Seek professional help. If you are struggling with the emotional and psychological effects of abuse, consider seeking professional counselling or therapy.

• Practice self-care. Taking care of yourself physically and mentally is essential for your recovery. This includes eating healthy, exercising regularly, getting enough sleep, and engaging in activities that you enjoy.

Embrace New Beginnings in the New Year

The New Year is a time for new beginnings, and it can be a powerful time to start your journey of healing from domestic abuse. Here are a few things you can do to embrace new beginnings in the New Year:

• Set goals for your recovery. What do you want to achieve in the year ahead? Make specific and achievable goals that will help you move forward.

• Seek support from others. Surround yourself with people who believe in you and support your recovery.

• Be kind to yourself. Recovery takes time and effort. Be patient with yourself and celebrate your progress along the way.

• Celebrate your strength and resilience. You have survived domestic abuse, and you are stronger than you think.

Remember, you are not alone. There are many resources available to help you heal from domestic abuse and reclaim your life. Reach out for help and take steps towards a brighter future.
