Mums In Need Ambassador Miranda recently took part in an important conversation exploring how workplaces can better support people experiencing domestic abuse.
Hosted by Global’s Make Some Noise and led by Poppy Lindsey, the discussion brought together Miranda from Mums In Need and Yasmin Khan CBE from The Halo Project and Emma Flemming CEO of Future Living.
The event focused on the important role workplaces can play in supporting survivors of domestic abuse. For someone experiencing abuse, the workplace can provide safety, connection and financial independence, making the response of employers and colleagues particularly important.
The conversation explored how domestic abuse is not always physical and why leaving an abusive relationship can be complex and difficult. It also considered how managers and colleagues can feel more confident responding when someone discloses that they are experiencing abuse.
A key message from the discussion was that people do not need to be experts to offer support. Listening without judgement, respecting someone's choices and helping them access specialist support can make a meaningful difference.
The event also highlighted the importance of workplaces creating an environment where employees feel safe to ask for help, supported by understanding, flexibility and clear policies.
For Mums In Need, this conversation is particularly relevant because our work focuses on post-separation abuse. Abuse does not necessarily end when a relationship ends, and mums can continue to experience coercive control, financial abuse, harassment and other forms of abuse after separation.
Creating greater awareness of domestic abuse in the workplace can help colleagues and employers recognise potential signs, understand the challenges survivors may face and respond in a supportive and informed way.
We would like to thank Global’s Make Some Noise for creating space for this important conversation and for encouraging greater awareness and understanding of domestic abuse in the workplace.
