Become A Trustee
We are seeking General Trustees and a Treasurer to join our Board at Mums In Need. This is a volunteering opportunity.
Mums In Need is a Sheffield based charity that offers a unique support service for mums suffering ongoing coercive control after separation from an abusive partner. We are a small charity with a skilled and dedicated team of staff and volunteers who offer an effective needs-led service.
Mums In Need makes a massive difference in the lives of women who are very vulnerable and often lost in the system with nowhere to turn for help and support. To enable us to continue to make this positive impact in our community we need a Board of Trustees who can provide expertise and guidance to support the delivery of our services by our dedicated team.
Becoming a Trustee
Becoming a Trustee of a charity is a very fulfilling opportunity. Knowing you are making a difference to the lives of others and within your community is extremely rewarding. The Trustee role will enable you to gain new skills, experience and knowledge.
Trustees are legally accountable for the operation of the charity; its property, finances, employment of staff and the wellbeing of the volunteers. Applicants should have an awareness of the duties and responsibilities of being a Trustee.
Who we are looking for
We are seeking enthusiastic and committed people to join our existing Board of Trustees. You may have had previous experience at Board level or within the charity sector and while we would welcome this it isn’t essential as we will mentor and train you.
Ideal candidates will have experience of one or more of the following – leadership, or the desire to develop leadership skills, financial accounting, fundraising, service delivery, strategy and planning, governance, human resources or IT systems.
Commitments
The Mums In Need Board meets four times a year, usually in office hours, at our premises in Tinsley. The time needed to fulfil ongoing trustee duties averages out at around two hours a week.
The Trustee Role
As a Trustee you will:
work as part of a team with other Trustees and the CEO making decisions in the best interest of stakeholders;
monitor compliance with relevant laws affecting the charity including safeguarding;
approve and drive the charity’s mission statement and priorities; review delivery of those priorities, work to mitigate associated risks;
review and approve financial goals, budgets and spending;

More about Mums In Need
Mums In Need offers practical guidance and emotional support to mums who have left emotionally abusive partners. We support women who struggle to get help elsewhere because they are no longer with their partners and their abuse is not deemed ‘high risk’ enough to be supported by other organisations. We aim to help our mums gain an understanding of exactly what they can do to rebuild their lives and their confidence. Our support includes access to legal and financial guidance, peer group support via coffee mornings, one-to-one sessions, empowerment and holistic therapies, together with a range of other services to provide our mums with the tools they need to rebuild their lives.
Mums In Need was founded by Laura Riley whose vision as Founder and CEO supporting women for whom there is no support elsewhere is inspirational to everyone she meets. We hope you feel inspired to join us.
