The Power of Connection - healing from abuse through community support

Understanding the Isolation of Abuse

Being on the other end of abuse is a harrowing experience that leaves deep emotional scars. One of the most insidious tactics used by perpetrators is isolation. By cutting off their victims from friends, family, and other sources of support, abusers exert control and deepen their victim’s sense of helplessness. This isolation not only makes it harder for victims to seek help but also hinders their ability to recognise that they deserve better.

At Mums In Need (MIN), we understand that breaking this cycle of isolation is crucial for the healing and recovery of mothers who have endured domestic abuse. Social connection and human interaction are vital components of the healing process. Our mission is to create a supportive community where these women can rebuild their lives, regain their confidence, and foster new, healthy relationships.

The Importance of Socialising

As human beings we are inherently social creatures. We thrive on interaction, connection, and shared experiences. For survivors of abuse, reconnecting with others can be a powerful step towards reclaiming independence and a sense of self. Socialising helps in many ways:

MIN's Coffee Mornings: A Safe Haven for Mums and Children

At MIN, we are proud to offer a range of programs designed to foster connection and support for mothers and their children who have gone through abuse. One of these initiatives is our coffee mornings. These gatherings provide a relaxed and welcoming environment where mums can meet, share their stories, and support one another.

Our coffee mornings are more than just a chance to chat over a cup of coffee. They are a lifeline for many women, offering:

We have recently been holding our coffee mornings at Wagamama’s. This Japanese inspired restaurant’s philosophy revolves around making positive change, so it is well fitting that they have been allies of  MIN since 2023 under our Corporate Partnership Scheme for meaningful change.

Celebrating Our Volunteers

None of our work at MIN would be possible without the dedication and hard work of our incredible volunteers. From organizing events to providing emotional support, our volunteers are the backbone of our organization. They bring compassion, commitment, and a wealth of skills that help us make a real difference in the lives of the women we support.

Earlier this June, during Volunteers Recognition Week, we had the opportunity to celebrate and thank our volunteers for their invaluable contributions. Their generosity with their time and talents is truly inspiring, and we want to extend our heartfelt appreciation to each and every one of them.

Volunteers are essential in creating the warm, supportive community that MIN strives to be. They help our mums feel valued, understood, and connected, reinforcing the message that they are not alone in their journey.
